Indonesia launches village supply chain: 30,000 co-ops by 2026

According to en.antaranews.com, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced on Monday, July 20, 2026, that his administration will establish a vertically integrated national supply chain anchored by Red and White Village Cooperatives — with a target of 30,000 operational cooperatives by the end of 2026.

Centralized Supply Chain to Reach Every Village

Speaking at a plenary cabinet meeting held at the State Palace in Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto declared this initiative marks a historic first for Indonesia.

“For the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, the government will have a supply chain running from the center all the way to the villages.”

The system is designed to eliminate bottlenecks between producers and consumers, particularly in agricultural distribution. According to the source, the cooperatives will directly manage movement of goods from surplus regions to deficit areas — a mechanism intended to stabilize prices and support national inflation control efforts.

Infrastructure and Operational Scale

Each cooperative will be equipped with standardized physical infrastructure, including warehouses, cold storage rooms, transport vehicles, and retail commodity outlets. These facilities will distribute not only agricultural produce but also generic medicines and government-subsidized goods. As of mid-July 2026, construction has been completed for 15,845 Red and White Village Cooperatives, while another 19,539 are still under development. This brings the total number of cooperatives in active development or operation to 35,384 — exceeding the year-end target of 30,000 by more than 5,000, though the source clarifies only the completed and operational ones count toward the official target.

Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion

The initiative aims to reduce rural farmers’ reliance on informal lending. By shortening the distribution chain and enabling direct market access, cooperatives are expected to improve income predictability and margin retention for smallholders. The president linked the concept to his decades-long engagement with rural communities, citing his experience as a military officer stationed in remote areas — an observation he reiterated during the 79th National Cooperative Day commemoration in Jakarta on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Related reporting confirms the Ministry of Cooperatives is concurrently launching training and certification for 29,830 KDMP (Village Cooperative Development Managers), reinforcing institutional capacity building at the local level.

Early Performance and Regional Implementation

Early transaction data signals functional traction: Red and White Village Cooperatives have already recorded $3.6 million in cumulative transactions as of July 17, 2026. Regionally, East Java leads implementation, reporting Rp17.45 billion (approximately $1.1 million at prevailing exchange rates) in cooperative-based transactions. The government has also directed that social assistance payments and fuel and electricity subsidies be channeled exclusively through these cooperatives — a move that integrates fiscal policy delivery with grassroots economic infrastructure. Grocery stores serve as operational anchors for many cooperatives, according to the Minister of Cooperatives, further embedding them into daily village commerce.
