Maersk Opens S$200M Automated DC in Singapore

According to logistics-manager.com, Maersk has opened World Gateway II — a 1.1 million sq ft fully automated global and regional distribution centre in Singapore — to expand its contract logistics and e-commerce fulfilment capabilities across Asia Pacific.

Strategic Infrastructure for Regional Fulfilment

The facility is designed to support both B2B and B2C fulfilment for customers using Singapore as a regional or global distribution hub. It will handle products across multiple sectors, including lifestyle, FMCG, retail, wellness and technology. World Gateway II is located near key transport infrastructure — specifically Tuas Port and Changi Airport — and sits adjacent to Maersk’s existing one million sq ft World Gateway regional distribution centre.

Automation and Operational Capabilities

The site features advanced automation technologies, including a multi-shuttle system, an automated storage and retrieval system, and autonomous case-handling robots. These systems aim to improve order fulfilment speed, accuracy and operational scalability. Maersk has invested more than S$200 million in the development, which has reached around 70% occupancy. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to create approximately 500 jobs involving digital and automation capabilities.

Integrated Services and Sustainability Credentials

World Gateway II includes bonded and zero-GST warehouse storage, end-to-end transport management, real-time shipment visibility, and value-added services such as labelling, kitting and repacking. It also deploys an integrated warehouse management system. Environmentally, the facility is LEED Platinum and Green Mark Platinum certified, incorporating solar panels, smart LED lighting and energy-efficient insulation. It holds Transported Asset Protection Association Class A certification for secure warehousing.

Context for Supply Chain Professionals

This expansion reflects a broader industry trend toward automation-enabled regional hubs in high-connectivity locations. In recent years, DHL expanded North America infrastructure for data centre logistics, and K LINE achieved autonomous ship inspection milestones in Japan — signalling accelerated adoption of intelligent systems across logistics nodes. For supply chain professionals, facilities like World Gateway II offer scalable, compliant, and digitally integrated warehousing options — particularly valuable amid growing demand for faster cross-border e-commerce fulfilment and resilient APAC distribution networks. The proximity to Tuas Port (set to become the world’s largest fully automated terminal by 2040) further enhances multimodal connectivity for shippers managing complex Asia Pacific flows.
