BMW cuts 8,000 jobs by 2027 amid EU supply chain retooling

According to logisticsviewpoints.com, BMW plans to eliminate several thousand positions in Germany by the end of 2027 through a voluntary severance program — with Reuters citing a source estimating the global workforce reduction could reach approximately 8,000 positions.

Strategic Restructuring Beyond Production Lines

Unlike typical automaker layoffs driven by weakened demand, BMW’s move targets administrative and development functions — not production workers. This reflects a deliberate effort to streamline decision-making, reduce organizational overhead, and adapt to shrinking margins. The company’s second-quarter €1.697 billion profit before tax represents a 35.1% decline year-on-year, while automotive segment earnings before interest and taxes fell 60.7% to €629 million. Automotive operating margin dropped from 5.4% to 2.3%.

China’s Collapse as a Profit Engine

BMW Group deliveries in China plunged 30.2% in the second quarter — from 168,959 vehicles to 117,927. First-half deliveries in China were down 20.4%. Global second-quarter deliveries declined 4.9%, despite growth in Europe and the United States. Chinese automakers are no longer just low-cost competitors: they now rapidly develop new EVs, integrate software effectively, and dominate segments where industry investment is most concentrated.

Margin Pressure and Policy Convergence

U.S. tariffs alone reduced BMW’s automotive margin by approximately 1.25 percentage points during the second quarter and first half. Revenue fell 7.9% to €31.259 billion. BMW has lowered its 2026 automotive margin forecast from 4%–6% to 1%–3% and now expects group profit before tax to fall significantly year-on-year. At the same time, France, Germany, and the European Commission are advancing coordinated policies to retain automotive production and component value inside Europe — making sourcing more regional, traceable, and policy-aligned.

Leadership Driving Structural Review

Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW’s new CEO, has stated the company will revisit processes and structures previously considered untouchable. The review spans sales, procurement, production, and development. Selling and administrative expenses in the automotive business fell 8.3% during the quarter — yet failed to offset market deterioration. BMW also plans to reduce model variants where demand no longer justifies complexity, signaling that process simplification may matter more than headcount totals.

BMW’s historical flexibility — maintaining factories capable of building combustion, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles — has not insulated it from structural pressures. Its premium positioning once buffered it from price competition at the lower end of the market, but that advantage erodes as Chinese EV makers gain scale, speed, and software integration prowess. The convergence of internal lean initiatives and external regulatory tightening means BMW must navigate dual imperatives: cutting bureaucracy while managing a more politically entangled, less globally optimized supply chain.

The implications extend beyond BMW. As Europe moves toward industrial policy-driven localization, other OEMs face similar trade-offs between agility and compliance. Supply chain professionals must now weigh real-time cost modeling against tariff exposure, traceability mandates, and shifting regional incentives — all while supporting parallel propulsion architectures and software-defined vehicle platforms. The era of globally distributed, functionally siloed automotive development is giving way to integrated, policy-sensitive, and operationally consolidated networks.
