Henkel Targets 30% Scope 3 Emissions Cut by 2030

According to sustainabilityonline.net, Henkel has announced a binding target to reduce its absolute Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030, using 2021 as the baseline year. The Düsseldorf-based chemical and consumer goods company also aims for a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions over the same period and plans to achieve net zero across all scopes by 2045.

Progress and Current Performance

As of last year (2025), Henkel reported a 29% reduction across all emission scopes compared to 2021 levels. Its operational decarbonisation includes 37 production sites operating carbon-neutrally, and globally, 97% of its electricity now comes from renewable sources.

Sustainability Strategy Expansion

Beyond emissions, Henkel’s revised sustainability strategy includes several measurable packaging goals:

  • Increase the share of recycled plastic in consumer packaging to 35% by 2030, up from the current 28%
  • Design 100% of packaging for recyclability, up from the current 88%

These packaging targets will be supported by specialised adhesive solutions developed by Henkel’s Adhesive Technologies business unit and tested at customer centres in Düsseldorf and Shanghai.

Supply Chain Sustainability Initiatives

The company is actively engaging suppliers to advance upstream decarbonisation. Henkel stated it will continue evaluating suppliers against criteria covering environmental protection, safety, and social standards. By 2030, it aims for 85% of its suppliers to meet its defined sustainability criteria.

Workforce and Recognition Milestones

On social sustainability, Henkel targets global gender balance in management by 2030 — defined as more than 45% representation for both women and men across all management levels. As of end-2025, women accounted for more than 43% of its management. It also aims for global pay equity by 2030. In 2025, Henkel earned an ‘A’ rating in the climate category from CDP and Gold status from EcoVadis.

“For 150 years, Henkel has demonstrated that responsible practice and strong business performance go hand in hand. In today’s challenging and volatile environment, it is more important than ever to take a clear and consistent stance in shaping a sustainable future.” — Carsten Knobel, CEO of Henkel
