Apple holds $1B in unfinished A20 Pro chips amid DRAM shortage

According to finance.biggo.com, Apple is holding approximately $1 billion in finished but unpackageable A20 Pro wafers at TSMC facilities due to a critical shortage of DRAM chips, threatening timely availability of the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable iPhone ahead of their expected September launch.

Wafer-Level Packaging Bottleneck

The A20 Pro — Apple’s first processor built on TSMC’s N2 node — relies on a new Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging technology that bonds DRAM directly to the logic die at the wafer level. Unlike prior fan-out packaging methods used by TSMC for roughly a decade, this approach eliminates post-fabrication memory soldering. As supply chain journalist Tim Culpan reported,

Without DRAM, the packaging step cannot proceed — meaning no functional logic board, and thus no working device.

Assembly Pressure and Launch Timeline

Foxconn and BYD, Apple’s primary assemblers inside mainland China, now face a severely compressed production window. With $1 billion worth of A20 Pro wafers idle at TSMC, reserve stock buildup for launch-day orders is constrained. While Apple and its partners expect to meet opening-weekend demand, wait times for online orders could extend into weeks after launch. The company plans total shipments of about 200 million units across the foldable iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18, and iPhone 18 Pro this generation — a target made harder to reach given that the iPhone 17 lineup shipped over 245 million units in 2025.

DRAM Supply Constraints Deepen

Memory manufacturers are prioritizing high-margin server-grade components, particularly high-bandwidth memory (HBM), over mobile DRAM. Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung have reportedly sold DRAM and HBM capacity through 2027, locking in long-term contracts with data center customers. Apple’s attempt to source lower-cost DRAM from China’s CXMT collapsed on price, leaving it reliant on those three suppliers. Apple has also reportedly lobbied U.S. government officials for clearance to use CXMT, as Washington weighs whether to ban the Chinese memory supplier outright.

Foldable iPhone Adds Complexity

The foldable iPhone introduces additional uncertainty: trial assembly began in April, but hinge durability tests stalled ramp-up in May. A July supply chain report placed engineering validation one to two months behind schedule; however, an August 3 leak claimed scaling problems had been resolved without redesign. Apple remains on track to unveil the device in September with a book-style form factor, an inner screen close to 7.8 inches, and a price above $2,000. Because it shares the A20 Pro platform with the iPhone 18 Pro, any chip shortage affects the entire lineup.

Broader Product Impact and Structural Risk

The DRAM shortage has already spilled beyond smartphones: the MacBook Air is no longer available on short notice, signaling broadening tightness in Apple’s supply chain. This episode reveals a structural vulnerability — Apple’s shift to wafer-level memory integration ties flagship product readiness to a single packaging step dependent on just three major DRAM suppliers. When those suppliers prioritize higher-margin server contracts, Apple’s negotiating leverage diminishes. The bottleneck underscores how tightly coupled design innovation and component sourcing have become — and how quickly a single missing part can stall hundreds of millions of devices.
