Toyota invests $3.6B to shift Tacoma production to Texas

Toyota invests $3.6B to shift Tacoma production to Texas

According to www.supplychainbrain.com, Toyota plans to invest $3.6 billion to relocate midsize pickup truck production from its plant in Mexico to its San Antonio, Texas campus.

Expansion Scope and Capacity Targets

The investment will fund the addition of a second vehicle assembly line at the San Antonio manufacturing campus, with the facility’s footprint set to expand to more than 5 million square feet by 2030. Current annual output at the site stands at 200,000 units, and the expansion aims to raise capacity to 350,000 units per year.

The San Antonio plant currently produces the Tundra pickup and the Sequoia hybrid SUV. The new line will be dedicated to the Tacoma, marking the first time the model is assembled in the U.S. for domestic and North American markets.

Strategic Context within U.S. Investment Commitments

This project forms part of Toyota’s broader $10 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing through 2030. The automaker has already allocated $1 billion to increase production capacity at plants in Kentucky and Indiana. An additional $912 million is designated for upgrades across facilities in West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri.

A separate $531 million investment supports construction of a rear axle plant on the same San Antonio campus — a 500-million-square-foot facility scheduled to open this fall. These layered investments underscore Toyota’s multi-year, multi-state capital deployment strategy anchored in nearshoring and supply chain resilience.

Operational Continuity and Regional Footprint

Despite the Texas expansion, Toyota confirmed it will maintain operations in Mexico. According to a statement issued to CNBC, a portion of Tacoma production will continue at the company’s plant in Guanajuato, Mexico — preserving dual-sourcing flexibility and mitigating single-point risk.

This approach aligns with industry-wide trends among global OEMs responding to evolving trade dynamics, including USMCA compliance incentives and regional content requirements. Unlike full offshoring reversals, Toyota’s model reflects calibrated nearshoring: consolidating high-volume final assembly in the U.S. while retaining strategic component manufacturing and light-assembly capacity elsewhere in North America.

“By expanding our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to American manufacturing, creating meaningful and sustainable jobs, while advancing our mission to deliver high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of customers today and into the future.” — Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota North America

Supply Chain Implications

For supply chain professionals, the move signals a material shift in Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier engagement. The ramp-up requires reconfiguration of logistics lanes from northern Mexico into Texas, including increased reliance on rail intermodal corridors linking Monterrey and San Antonio, as well as expanded warehousing infrastructure near the expanded campus.

Procurement teams must adapt to revised localization targets: U.S.-assembled Tacomas will need higher North American content percentages to qualify for tariff exemptions under USMCA. That pressures suppliers to accelerate reshoring or establish U.S.-based machining, stamping, and subassembly operations — particularly for cab structures, chassis components, and powertrain integration.

The July 6 announcement date precedes anticipated U.S. regulatory updates on EV tax credits and battery mineral sourcing rules, suggesting Toyota is front-loading physical capacity ahead of policy-driven demand shifts. With the Tundra and Sequoia already produced in San Antonio, integrating Tacoma strengthens platform commonality and reduces cross-border parts movement — cutting lead times and inventory carrying costs across the pickup portfolio.
