The international logistics company Aquantuo, located in Dover, Delaware, has been awarded the highest honor in the Global Star category of CO—100 for 2024.

Aquantuo provides a critical service to individuals and businesses across Africa by enabling them to easily purchase goods from US companies and other international markets that traditionally do not ship to the continent. Through its robust logistics network, Aquantuo handles all aspects of international shipping, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery for thousands of customers.

Breaking Down Barriers in Global Commerce

Aquantuo’s unique value proposition stems from a significant challenge: many US retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, and Target either do not ship to Africa or offer limited shipping options.

“This is mainly due to the complexity of international shipping, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery for those unfamiliar with diverse markets, which typically requires at least six different parties to complete all three tasks,” explains Aquantuo founder Clement Owusu-Donkor.

To address this critical gap in the market, Owusu-Donkor founded Aquantuo as a one-stop platform for shopping and delivery. Through Aquantuo’s services, customers receive an American warehouse address and can shop from any online store, with Aquantuo handling all subsequent processes.

Since its founding in 2016, Aquantuo has expanded its shipping options from the US, Canada, China, and the UK to include eight African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, among others. The company’s next goal is to penetrate deeper into the African market with a long-term vision of expanding to at least half of Africa’s 54 countries.

“This isn’t just about one country in Africa; it’s about all African nations,” Owusu-Donkor explains. “We see tremendous growth opportunities, especially in regions where our services can truly change people’s lives by facilitating international trade.”

Innovating with Concierge Services and Seamless Currency Solutions

According to Owusu-Donkor, listening to customer feedback has helped Aquantuo identify new service opportunities, including a concierge service that transformed its business model.

This concierge service allows businesses outside the US to source and purchase goods from American retailers, with Aquantuo handling procurement and international shipping. This innovation creates dual revenue streams for the company through sourcing services and logistics to deliver products to Africa.

What sets this service apart is its flexibility in currency transactions.

“It allows customers to pay for their purchases in one of eight local currencies from our eight African countries, while we transact in US dollars,” Owusu-Donkor explains. “This involves complex foreign exchange transactions that we handle seamlessly and meticulously to ensure no… losses.”

Overcoming Challenges Through Strategic Innovation

Aquantuo’s growth has not been without challenges. One major hurdle was managing operations in China, where the company initially relied on third-party logistics providers. However, after facing communication issues and shipping schedules, Aquantuo made a strategic decision to cut out intermediaries and establish its own warehouse in China.

“This gives us over 90% control of our business in China,” Owusu-Donkor said. “We have full command over our operations in China, providing better communication for customers, reducing shipping times, and saving costs.”

Another key factor behind Aquantuo’s success is its marketing strategy tailored to a global audience. The company employs a combination of digital marketing strategies, including social media advertising on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, to attract a worldwide customer base.

This multi-channel approach, combined with frequent blog posts and email campaigns, allows Aquantuo to acquire new customers while maintaining existing ones through personalized marketing efforts. These efforts have proven effective in sustaining a global clientele where over 75% are international customers.

Aquantuo’s forward-thinking mindset and commitment to providing seamless solutions for global commerce has positioned it as a leader in cross-border logistics. As the company continues to expand, its impact on global trade is set to grow significantly in the coming years.

CO—aims to bring you inspiration from respected experts. However, before making any business decisions, you should consult professionals who can provide advice based on your specific circumstances.
