Amazon India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India Post to leverage the postal service’s extensive last-mile delivery network for Amazon’s nationwide distribution. The partnership aims to synchronize operations through integration and knowledge sharing to maximize efficiency, optimize resource utilization, and explore capacity sharing between logistics networks.
In recent years, India Post has expanded its influence within Amazon’s logistics network by establishing 13 pickup points across the country. Amazon is the first e-commerce company to achieve end-to-end integration with India Post for cash-on-delivery solutions, with the number of Amazon packages sent through India Post nearly tripling over the past 18 months.
Journey Towards Modernization
Postal Secretary Vandita Kaul emphasized during discussions about this collaboration that India Post’s vast network of approximately 165,000 post offices plays a crucial role in popularizing e-commerce nationwide. The partnership with Amazon is seen as a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and enhancing universal access to e-commerce. The government is focusing on transforming the postal department into a comprehensive logistics service provider, recognizing the importance of strategic alliances for modernization and growth.
Effective Collaboration
The newly signed MoU will enable Amazon to serve all 19,300 post office districts and military locations across India through its mail services. The collaboration also extends to cross-border trade; a previously signed MoU aims to create integrated cross-border logistics solutions for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide to expand e-commerce exports.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, stated that the relationship with India Post is crucial for Amazon’s growth in India and has helped make e-commerce a national phenomenon.
Faster Delivery
Amazon India has also expanded its collaboration with Indian Railways to accelerate nationwide express deliveries. This partnership is critical for achieving one-day and two-day delivery across the country during peak seasons. Both parties will work on identifying hub-and-spoke networks, priority railway zones, and large parcel centers to implement efficient transportation strategies from hubs to spoke locations.
