Maersk Ditches Suez Canal Route, Pushes Forward with Gemini Launch Plan

Maersk Excludes Suez Canal Route for Gemini Launch

The Alexandra Maersk, with a capacity of 16,592 TEUs, was recently named on its maiden voyage to Felixstowe. This is the sixth dual-fuel vessel in an order of eighteen and will be deployed on the Asia-Europe trade lane. Image source: Maersk.

Felixstowe, UK – As shippers prepare for their Asia-Europe transportation needs next year, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have decided to exclude Suez Canal route options when launching the new Gemini Cooperation network on February 1, 2024.

This is the clearest signal yet from carriers that they do not expect a return to Red Sea sailings for next year, while shippers are already preparing their contracts for 2025. The Gemini decision to remove the shorter Suez Canal route from its network commits to the longer South African route.

This shift by ocean carriers will occur when the Suez Canal route is no longer considered at risk of attack by Houthi rebels…
