Asda is investing in the construction of two new bio-liquefied natural gas (Bio-LNG) refueling facilities, marking a significant advancement for the retailer in reducing overall carbon emissions.
In collaboration with Gasrec, one of the UK’s leading commercial vehicle fuel suppliers, these new facilities are located in Warrington and Dartford. This brings the total number of Asda-operated Bio-LNG sites across the UK to thirteen, all fully operational and strategically distributed.
With a fleet exceeding 780 trucks, Asda operates the largest LNG-fueled truck fleet in the UK, with this fuel considered the leading low-carbon alternative to diesel. Through its new infrastructure, Asda will continue to advance decarbonization efforts within its operations, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040.
Earlier this year, Asda revealed in its annual environmental, social, and governance report that operational carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) had decreased by 41% since 2015, with a target to achieve a 50% reduction by 2025.
John Rogerson, Asda’s Central Fleet Operations Manager, stated: “LNG trucks are currently the primary alternative fuel option for operators like us. With over 780 LNG vehicles in our fleet, we operate the largest LNG-fueled truck fleet in the UK. Our continued investment in an LNG distribution network across the country is a key part of reducing carbon emissions from operations and building a sustainable business.”

This investment follows Asda’s recent launch of a new sustainability-linked supply chain finance program in collaboration with HSBC UK. Expected to commence in January 2025, the project aims to promote better sustainable practices within its supply chain through financial incentives.
