Bassett Furniture Navigates Impact of Hurricane Helen and Port Strikes
=========================================================================

Operations at one of the company’s distribution centers were halted post-storm, leading to shipping delays of up to two weeks.

Released on October 15, 2024

### Headline Summary:

– According to Bassett Furniture’s Q3 earnings call in 2024, the impact of Hurricane Helen and the East Coast and Gulf Coast port strikes by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is expected to affect the company’s fourth-quarter performance.
– CEO Rob Spilman informed analysts that the hurricane caused a distribution center in Catawba County, North Carolina, to close for two days during the first week of October. He added that the strike delayed shipments by one to two weeks.
– “We are working as quickly as possible to get our shipping back on track,” said Spilman, noting that long-term impacts on logistics and distribution systems are due to storm damage to major western transportation routes, such as Interstate 40.

### In-Depth Analysis:

Extreme weather events and labor unrest have created a season of supply chain disruptions, hindering or halting operations along the East Coast and Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Helen caused over 200 fatalities, damaging roads and infrastructure in the Southeast, leading to suspensions or delays by courier companies like FedEx and UPS in certain areas.

Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton hit Florida, closing ports, flooding freight routes, and disrupting delivery services.

Meanwhile, although the ILA strike lasted only three days, its impact on supply chains persisted, with backlogs and shipping restrictions causing significant headaches for shippers.

However, these recent events are not Bassett’s first encounter with supply chain disruptions this year.

In July, a cyberattack led to the suspension of some manufacturing operations at the company.

Bassett CFO Mike Daniel confirmed during Q3 earnings that the shutdown lasted one week. He noted that no consumer information was compromised and the company recovered all data and fully resumed operations within two weeks of the attack. However, the CFO estimated losses between $1 million and $2 million due to this incident.

“Rebuilding supply chain efficiency and loading these goods, as well as shipping them out, indeed affected our July and August,” Spilman added, pointing out that the company operates a dedicated distribution center.

While navigating multiple supply chain disruptions, Bassett is also implementing its restructuring plan announced in July. This includes ongoing consolidation of production facilities and exiting a wholesale distribution center on the West Coast, which was completed in Q3. Spilman noted that vacating this facility incurred $1.2 million in costs.
