India, Japan Target $150B Semiconductor Demand by 2032

According to smestreet.in, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal concluded an official visit to Japan on Wednesday, engaging leaders from more than 30 major Japanese companies and financial institutions across Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka to accelerate investment and strengthen supply chains.

Strategic Investment Mobilisation

The Minister held discussions with top-tier Japanese financial institutions including MUFG, Mizuho, Nomura, Nippon Life, Development Bank, and Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities, focusing on channeling long-term institutional capital into India’s infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, and financial ecosystems. These talks support the bilateral target of JPY 10 trillion in Japanese private investment in India over the next decade — a goal agreed during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025.

Semiconductor and AI Partnership

At the Semiconductor and AI Roundtable, Shri Goyal underscored India’s ambition to build a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem, noting that semiconductor demand is projected to reach USD 150 billion by 2032. He outlined the Government’s six-pillar strategy covering chip design, semiconductor machinery and materials, fabrication, ATMP/OSAT, R&D, and talent development. Japanese firms expressed interest in expanding their footprint in semiconductor materials, power semiconductors, electronics, AI, and logistics technologies — particularly in emerging clusters such as Dholera and Sanand.

Broader Economic Engagement

Shri Goyal also met with Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry H.E. Mr. Akazawa Ryosei, and senior representatives of JETRO, JBIC, and JICA. During his address to Keidanren — representing over 1,500 leading Japanese companies — he highlighted the deepening scope of the India-Japan partnership, spanning economic security, resilient supply chains, clean energy, defence-related manufacturing, and people-to-people linkages. He reaffirmed India’s growth fundamentals, citing 7.7 per cent GDP expansion despite global headwinds and the national vision to become a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047.
