Ferrero cuts Scope 1–2 emissions 7.2%, boosts traceability to 98.6%

According to sustainabilityonline.net, Italian confectionery giant Ferrero reported measurable progress across its environmental and sourcing goals in its 2024/25 Sustainability Report, including a 7.2% year-on-year reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and traceability rates exceeding 97% for key agricultural inputs.

Sourcing at the Core

Ferrero positioned its Ferrero Farming Values programme as central to its corporate strategy, describing it as a ‘structured framework’ designed to strengthen supplier accountability, improve traceability and certification, support farmers, and foster cross-sector collaboration — while adapting to the distinct realities of each ingredient supply chain.

Lapo Civiletti, chief executive officer of Ferrero Group, emphasized this integrated approach:

“The enhanced Ferrero Farming Values programme provides a structured framework to strengthen supplier accountability, improve traceability and certification, support farmers, and drive collaboration across the sector, while allowing us to adapt to the specific realities of each ingredient supply chain.” — Lapo Civiletti, chief executive officer of Ferrero Group

Traceability and Certification Milestones

The report detailed significant advances in supply chain transparency. Cocoa sourcing reached 98% traceability; palm oil achieved 98.6%; hazelnuts stood at 97%; and coffee beans attained full 100% traceability. Nearly all (99%) of Ferrero’s cocoa is sourced through recognized certification schemes or independently managed sustainability standards — including Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, and Cocoa Horizons.

These figures reflect multi-year investments in digital traceability tools, farmer training, and direct engagement with cooperatives across West Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia — regions critical to Ferrero’s raw material base.

Emissions and Packaging Progress

Ferrero reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 7.2% year-on-year during the 2024/25 financial year — supported by 24 of its manufacturing facilities switching to 100% renewable electricity. For Scope 3 emissions — which account for over 90% of Ferrero’s total carbon footprint — the company now collects supplier emissions data covering approximately 60% of raw material volumes, with a supplier response rate of 93%.

In packaging, 92.2% of Ferrero’s global portfolio is now designed for recyclability, reusability, or compostability. A redesign of Ferrero Rocher packaging has cut plastic usage by 14.7% since the start of the decade — avoiding an estimated 16,000 tonnes of plastic.

Long-Term Vision Anchored in Resilience

Giovanni Ferrero, president of Ferrero Group, underscored the interdependence between business continuity and ecological and social health:

“Ferrero’s long-term success remains closely linked to the wellbeing of the people and ecosystems on which our supply chain depends. Consumers are increasingly looking for brands they can trust — built on quality, good sourcing practices, careful manufacturing, and a genuine commitment to people and the planet.” — Giovanni Ferrero, president of Ferrero Group

The company reaffirmed its commitment to advancing climate action, protecting natural resources, supporting farming communities, and delivering products aligned with evolving consumer expectations — all guided by its stated purpose and long-term vision. This includes ongoing investment in agroforestry, water stewardship, and gender-inclusive extension services across its sourcing regions.
