## Duisburg Gateway Terminal Officially Opens
Duisburg: This terminal will play a crucial role in Germany’s energy transition, utilizing digital systems and innovative green technologies such as hydrogen engines and photovoltaics.
On Monday, the **Duisburg Gateway Terminal (Duisburg Gateway Terminal, DGT)** officially opened on the former coal island. The first phase of construction has been completed, with DGT now operational. Upon full completion, DGT will become Europe’s largest inland terminal and Duisburg Port’s tenth container terminal.
“In a place that once processed coal for over 100 years, we now have a climate-neutral container terminal. The Duisburg Gateway Terminal is an outstanding example of the Ruhr region’s successful structural transformation: from initial idea to completion in just a few years, demonstrating that North Rhine-Westphalia is setting the pace,” said **Henrik Wuest**, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Duisburg Gateway Terminal sets new standards in productivity and market proximity: 730 meters of rail lines, fully digital processes, and a central location at the heart of Europe are key factors for successful multimodal operations.
In many ways, the Duisburg Gateway Terminal is a demonstration project for the future of logistics: the site spans an area equivalent to 33 football fields, with all cargo movements controlled digitally. The enerPort II project plays a critical role here. This collaboration between industry and academia will oversee the terminal’s complete energy transition. Key components include photovoltaic systems, fuel cell systems, hydrogen engines for power generation, and battery storage systems.
“Duisburg is playing an increasingly important role in Germany’s future energy transition. This can already be seen at the port: where millions of tons of coal were once processed, the Duisburg Gateway Terminal is making pioneering contributions to reducing CO2,” commented **Sören Link**, Mayor.
