Third-party logistics provider DSV has implemented a warehouse automation solution at its distribution center in the Netherlands, increasing productivity by 300% without adding extra personnel.
The omnichannel fulfillment solution provided by **KNAPP** transformed the company’s 60,000 square meter facility in Venlo, enabling DSV to efficiently process fashion and sports orders for a well-known sporting goods manufacturer.
#### Next-Day Delivery
On an average day, around 10,000 orders and 100,000 items are shipped from the facility to retail, wholesale, and online customers across Europe with same-day and next-day delivery service levels. The solution offers high flexibility for handling peak seasons typical in the fashion industry while optimizing shipment volumes through an automated box sealing system, ensuring sustainability.
Goods entering the warehouse are repackaged at 14 unpacking stations into **containers** or cartons, some of which are stored on pallets in high-bay racks. At the heart of the Venlo system is KNAPP’s Evo Shuttle, a small parts storage facility with over 257,000 storage locations for plastic containers and cartons, arranged across 19 levels at three depths. The system includes 361 transport vehicles that retrieve items as needed and deliver them to picking stations.
#### Optimizing Shipment Volumes
Fulfillment work takes place at one of the 16 goods-to-person workstations in KNAPP’s Pick-it-Easy series, where orders are directly assembled into shipping cartons provided by an automated box-forming machine. There are also 28 workstations for value-added services and manual packaging. After order assembly and before being sent to 14 loading ramps, the height of each transport carton is adjusted according to its contents, and shipping labels are applied in a fully automated process.
#### Warehouse Automation
In addition to storage, retrieval, and picking, the Evo Shuttle warehouse also handles order buffering and sorting of completed orders. The entire solution is controlled by KNAPP’s KiSoft software, which interfaces with DSV’s inventory control system, ensuring all processes run smoothly and error-free. This software suite manages real-time goods flow, inventory management, product master data, order release, quality checks, and document insertion.
