Apple Supply Chain Clean Energy Cuts 26M Tons CO₂, Reaches 20.7 GW

According to www.esgtoday.com, Apple avoided more than 26 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2025 through renewable energy procurement by its suppliers — a rise from 21.8 million tons in 2024. This progress is anchored in the company’s Supplier Clean Energy Program, launched in 2015, and reflects a broader push to decarbonize its value chain.

Renewable Energy Scale-Up Across Manufacturing

Apple reported that operational renewable energy capacity across its direct manufacturing supply chain reached 20.7 GW in 2025 — up from 18.9 GW in 2024 and 10.3 GW in 2021 — representing growth of nearly 10% year-on-year and more than doubling since 2021. Renewable electricity usage by suppliers rose to 38.3 million MWh last year, from 31.3 million MWh in 2024.

Climate Goals and Supplier Accountability

Product manufacturing accounts for over half of Apple’s total carbon footprint. To meet its 2030 carbon neutrality goal — which includes its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle — Apple requires all direct manufacturing suppliers to use 100% renewable electricity for Apple production by 2030, as stipulated in its Supplier Code of Conduct. The 2030 target entails a 75% reduction in emissions relative to a baseline; Apple has also pledged a 90% reduction by 2050.

Emissions Avoidance Breakdown

  • 26.0 million tons avoided via supplier clean energy procurement
  • 2.0 million tons avoided through energy efficiency improvements supported by Apple
  • 6.0 million tons avoided via low-carbon materials

Despite these advances, Apple’s total value chain GHG emissions remained flat year-on-year, as reductions in manufacturing, operations, and product use were offset by increased emissions from product transportation. Overall, Apple’s GHG footprint remains 60% below 2015 levels.

Complementary Sustainability Milestones

In parallel, Apple completed its transition to 100% fiber-based packaging in 2025 — fulfilling its pledge to eliminate plastic from packaging by that year. The company also achieved 30% recycled content across all products shipped in 2025, including 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries and 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets. Additionally, Apple replenished more than half the water it withdrew to support global offices, data centers, and retail stores in 2025.

“Across every part of our business, we’re showing how innovation and collaboration can turn big ideas and bold ambitions into measurable progress. From expanding recycled material to removing plastic from our packaging, we’re setting new benchmarks that inspire us to reach further and work even harder for the good of people and planet.” — Sabih Khan, Chief Operating Officer, Apple
