Asuene raises $87M led by BlackRock, Temasek decarbonization fund

According to www.esgtoday.com, Tokyo-based sustainability solutions platform Asuene has raised $87 million in a Series D funding round led by BlackRock and Temasek’s joint venture, Decarbonization Partners.

Funding Purpose and Strategic Expansion

The financing will accelerate Asuene’s growth as a “serial acquirer” across key sustainability disclosure markets — specifically the U.S., UK, and EU. The company plans to deploy capital toward mergers and acquisitions, AI-driven product development, and new business launches. This round marks Decarbonization Partners’ first investment in Japan, where Asuene was founded in 2019.

The round included a debt financing component from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). According to Asuene, regulatory momentum — including Japan’s SSBJ, the EU’s CSRD, and the EU’s CBAM — is transforming corporate sustainability from a compliance exercise into an integrated function spanning management, finance, and supply chains.

Platform Capabilities and Market Entry

Asuene offers an integrated suite of sustainability technologies: its flagship ASUENE platform supports GHG measurement, reduction, and reporting; ASUENE SUPPLY CHAIN manages supplier emissions and due diligence; and the NZero AI-powered Energy Reduction Platform — acquired by Asuene in 2025 — enables real-time energy optimization. That acquisition marked Asuene’s formal entry into the U.S. market.

  • ASUENE platform: GHG measurement, reduction, and reporting
  • ASUENE SUPPLY CHAIN: end-to-end supply chain carbon management
  • NZero: AI-driven energy reduction and efficiency analytics

The company positions itself as an “AI sustainability integrated platform built in Japan and taking on the world,” with product development now centered on embedding generative AI across its offerings to automate data collection, assurance, scenario modeling, and disclosure drafting.

Investor Rationale and Leadership Vision

Dr. Meghan Sharp, Global Head and CIO of Decarbonization Partners, emphasized the strategic shift in how sustainability data is used:

“As companies face increasing expectations to measure and reduce emissions across their operations and supply chains, sustainability data is evolving from a reporting requirement into a strategic business tool. ASUENE enables organizations not only to meet evolving disclosure requirements, but also to use emissions data to improve efficiency and drive better business outcomes.” — Dr. Meghan Sharp, Global Head and CIO, Decarbonization Partners

Kohei Nishiwada, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Asuene, stated:

“Alongside world-class institutional investors like BlackRock and Temasek, our team is moving as one to accelerate further M&A, expansion across Japan, global growth, and our shift to AI sustainability integrated company. As an AI sustainability integrated platform built in Japan and taking on the world, we’re committed to driving social impact and creating value at a scale never seen before.” — Kohei Nishiwada, Founder and CEO, Asuene

Decarbonization Partners was launched by BlackRock and Temasek in 2022 as a late-stage venture capital and growth private equity partnership targeting companies enabling the net-zero transition by 2050. Its mandate includes investments in technologies that decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, including industrial manufacturing, heavy transport, and energy-intensive supply chains — precisely the domains where Asuene’s platforms operate.

Regulatory Context and Industry Alignment

The timing of the round reflects intensifying global regulatory pressure. The EU’s CSRD requires large companies to publish sustainability reports aligned with ESRS standards starting in 2024 for fiscal year 2023 data; CBAM enforcement began in October 2023 with transitional reporting, escalating to full import duties in 2026. Meanwhile, Japan’s SSBJ (Sustainability Standards Board of Japan) issued its first disclosure guidelines in 2023, mandating climate-related financial disclosures for listed firms beginning in 2025.

This regulatory convergence has driven demand for integrated, auditable, and scalable sustainability infrastructure — a gap Asuene addresses through its vertically aligned stack. Unlike point-solution providers, Asuene links emissions calculation, supply chain mapping, third-party verification, carbon credit procurement, and AI-powered energy optimization within a single interoperable architecture — reducing manual reconciliation and audit risk for multinationals operating across Japan, EU, and U.S. jurisdictions.
