CONCOR inks MoU with IIT Roorkee to build AI logistics DSS

According to indiashippingnews.com, Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee to co-develop an Artificial Intelligence–driven Decision Support System (DSS) for domestic logistics planning, inventory management, and network optimization.

AI-Powered Multimodal Optimization

The system will focus on five core operational domains: train planning, trailer deployment, container inventory management, route optimization, and multimodal logistics coordination across CONCOR’s nationwide infrastructure — including 21 Inland Container Depots (ICDs), terminals, logistics parks, and rail services. The initiative leverages Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Geospatial Analytics, and Operations Research to build a scalable, real-time decision-making platform. According to the report, the DSS is designed to process live operational data streams to enable predictive demand forecasting and intelligent resource allocation — directly targeting reductions in transit times and empty container movements.

Operational and Environmental Impact

By optimizing asset utilization and equipment availability, the project aims to improve supply chain efficiency while supporting India’s green logistics goals. The source states that enhanced network optimization is expected to lower fuel consumption and significantly cut carbon emissions — aligning with national sustainability targets under the PM GatiShakti and National Logistics Policy frameworks. The MoU was signed on July 23, 2026, and marks a strategic milestone in CONCOR’s Industry 4.0 roadmap. As India’s largest multimodal logistics service provider, CONCOR operates over 21 ICDs across the country and manages more than 1.2 million TEUs annually — figures cited in prior public disclosures by the company.

Academic-Industry Integration

The collaboration unites IIT Roorkee’s research capacity in computational logistics with CONCOR’s field-level operational expertise. According to the report, this integration is intended to yield practical, deployable solutions tailored to India’s freight ecosystem — particularly its fragmented road-rail-container interface and seasonal demand volatility. The DSS will be tested initially at three high-volume ICDs — New Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata — before nationwide rollout. A joint working group comprising faculty from IIT Roorkee’s Department of Civil Engineering and CONCOR’s Digital Transformation Unit will oversee development, with milestones scheduled for Q3 2027 and full deployment targeted for 2028.

Strategic Alignment and National Context

This MoU reinforces CONCOR’s multiyear investment in digital infrastructure, including its recently launched Integrated Logistics Management System (ILMS) and IoT-enabled container tracking platform. It also mirrors parallel initiatives by other major Indian logistics entities: DHL launched an AI-powered warehouse optimization pilot in Bengaluru in May 2025, and Adani Ports & SEZ integrated predictive analytics into its terminal operations in Q2 2026. For supply chain professionals, the DSS promises measurable gains in equipment turnaround time — projected to improve by 18–22% — and inventory accuracy, with target error reduction of 35% across ICDs within two years of implementation.
