Colruyt, KION launch AI warehouse robotics hub; sell 70% stake

According to www.grocerytradenews.com, Belgian supermarket retailer Colruyt Group and intralogistics specialist KION Group have launched a dedicated AI warehouse robotics hub following a strategic transaction announced on 14 July 2026.

Strategic partnership and equity transfer

Colruyt Group has sold a 70% stake in its research and development activities for self-driving pallet trucks to KION Group, retaining a 30% ownership interest in the newly structured entity. The transaction is expected to generate approximately €20 million for Colruyt Group during the 2026/27 financial year. Going forward, Smart Innovation NV — the legal vehicle housing the R&D assets — will be accounted for as an associate using the equity method.

New R&D hub in Belgium

The companies will establish the KION Automation Center Antwerp in Belgium as a dedicated research and development centre focused on next-generation autonomous supply chain technologies. This hub will accelerate product development combining artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer vision — with engineering teams continuing to refine software intelligence originally developed by Colruyt’s Smart Innovation team. The centre’s output is intended for industrial-scale deployment across the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

Live deployment since 2023

Autonomous pallet trucks co-developed by Colruyt Group and KION brand STILL have already been operating in two Colruyt distribution centres since 2023. These vehicles use sensors, computer vision, and AI-powered navigation to identify pallets, avoid obstacles, and optimise transport routes — all while working safely alongside human employees. Unlike many pilot-stage robotics initiatives, this technology has demonstrated sustained real-world utility in live grocery logistics environments for over two years.

Why scale now?

The partnership aims to move beyond isolated pilots and achieve broad commercialisation. While Colruyt contributed proprietary software intelligence, KION Group brings global manufacturing capabilities, deep logistics expertise, and an international customer network — enabling rapid industrialisation and market rollout. As supermarket distribution centres face mounting pressure from labour shortages, rising operating costs, and increasing order volumes, automation has become a critical investment priority. Warehouse robotics — defined as automated machines assisting with pallet transport, goods movement, and order fulfilment — directly improves productivity, reduces repetitive manual work, and enhances operational safety.

Industry context and implications

This collaboration reflects a broader industry trend: retailers increasingly partner with technology specialists to commercialise internally developed innovations rather than keeping them siloed. According to the report, warehouse automation continues to attract significant investment across the grocery sector as companies modernise distribution networks for greater efficiency and resilience. Autonomous mobile robots, AI-driven inventory systems, and automated pallet handling are being adopted to support faster fulfilment and strengthen supply chain performance. By merging Colruyt’s software expertise with KION’s manufacturing scale and global reach, the partnership targets accelerated adoption of autonomous warehouse technologies beyond Belgium into international retail and logistics markets.
