Rise of Intelligent Automation: The Future of Automotive Manufacturing

The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by a surge in automation and robotics investments. According to ABB Robotics’ latest Automotive Manufacturing Outlook Survey, manufacturers are accelerating their adoption of automation technologies to stay competitive, control costs, and address workforce and energy pressures.

Automotive Manufacturers Prioritize Cost Control and Automation

Improving cost control and tighter budget management emerged as the single most important strategic priority, cited by 33 percent of respondents. This underscores the need to deliver productivity gains while managing rising input costs. The survey reveals that automation, particularly more autonomous and versatile robotics (AVRTM), is increasingly seen as a practical and near-term solution to cost pressures, labor availability, and energy efficiency challenges.

Workforce pressures remain a major factor, with 30 percent of respondents ranking labor shortages and rising wage costs among their most significant challenges. Skills availability continues to constrain production planning and operational flexibility in many regions. Meanwhile, energy and material costs remain a critical concern, cited by 34 percent of manufacturers, reinforcing the need for more efficient production processes and smarter resource use on the factory floor.

The Role of Robotics and Automation in Addressing Pressures

In response to these challenges, manufacturers are increasingly turning to robotics, automation, and autonomous material-handling solutions. Nearly one-third of respondents (31 percent) identified increased investment in automation and robotics as a key strategy for the year ahead. This highlights the role of intelligent automation in addressing multiple pressures simultaneously.

The survey also reveals a growing interest in a wider range of automation technologies. Collaborative robots (cobots) are seen as well suited to repetitive and time-consuming assembly tasks, working safely alongside human operators to improve consistency and throughput. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are increasingly valued for their ability to move parts and materials more safely and efficiently, reducing manual handling and streamlining intralogistics.

Shifting Towards Intelligent Factories

These trends reflect a broader shift toward intelligent factories built around more autonomous and versatile robotics (AVRTM). This shift enables manufacturers to respond faster to cost, labor, and energy pressures while maintaining productivity and resilience. Joerg Reger, managing director of ABB Robotics automotive business line, emphasized,

‘Manufacturers are investing more selectively and more intelligently in automation. Energy-efficient robots, flexible automation cells, cobots, and autonomous mobile robots all play a role in helping factories do more with less – increasing productivity while keeping costs and energy consumption under control.’

Expert Insight and Industry Context

The survey findings suggest that intelligent, automation-led manufacturing is moving firmly into the fast lane, becoming a central pillar of automotive production strategies worldwide. This shift is driven by the need to address the industry’s pressing challenges, such as rising labor and energy costs, labor shortages, and the demand for greater efficiency and productivity.

The global automotive industry is characterized by intense competition and rapidly evolving consumer demands. To remain competitive, manufacturers must continuously innovate and invest in new technologies. Automation and robotics offer a solution by enabling manufacturers to streamline production processes, reduce costs, and enhance productivity.

  • Increased investment in automation and robotics: 31% of respondents identified increased investment in automation and robotics as a key strategy for the year ahead.
  • Focus on cost control: 33% of respondents cited improving cost control and tighter budget management as their most important strategic priority.

Future Outlook

The future of automotive manufacturing looks bright for those who embrace automation and robotics. As the industry continues to evolve, manufacturers that invest in intelligent automation solutions will be well-positioned to meet the challenges of the future and lead the industry. The survey findings indicate that the trend towards automation is here to stay, and it is shaping the future of automotive manufacturing.
