According to FreightWaves, Overroute has raised $5.5 million to accelerate development and deployment of its AI-powered freight execution platform, now in active use across all of J.B. Hunt’s business units.
Proven in North America’s largest freight networks
The Arkansas-based startup emerged from a 2024 collaboration between J.B. Hunt and UP.Labs, with the platform launching publicly in July. Its AI agents are currently managing millions of loads per year across J.B. Hunt’s network — one of the most complex freight systems in North America. As Nick Hobbs, J.B. Hunt’s chief operating officer and president of Highway and Final Mile Services, stated in July:
“We operate one of the most complex freight networks in North America, and that gives us a unique opportunity to take emerging technology and apply it at real scale.”
Overroute’s system leverages real-time data and live loads from J.B. Hunt’s operations to identify and automate manual tasks throughout the load lifecycle — including monitoring shipments, flagging exceptions, rescheduling appointments, and communicating with drivers and customers. The platform integrates natively with existing carrier systems such as transportation management systems (TMS), visibility platforms, and ERP tools — requiring no workflow or tool replacement for operators.
J.B. Hunt reported that its Customer Experience representatives previously spent significant time toggling between multiple systems to gather, format, and deliver updates. Overroute’s agents now handle portions of that coordination, freeing staff to focus on high-touch customer interactions that require human judgment.
Funding and expansion strategy
UP.Partners led the funding round announced on Sept. 9, with participation from EIC Rose Rock, 1834 Ventures, Tulane Ventures, and other investors. Overroute plans to use the $5.5 million to hire new employees and accelerate product development, targeting broader adoption among enterprise carriers and private fleets.
“We’ve validated Overroute inside one of the largest and most complex freight networks in North America,” said Alex Reed, Overroute’s CEO, in the funding announcement.
“This funding gives us the capacity to take what we’ve learned there, continue investing aggressively in the product, and bring it to more enterprise fleets.”
The company’s go-to-market approach begins with embedding agents into a single high-value workflow — such as load monitoring or delivery scheduling — then expanding to additional tasks as value is demonstrated in production. Will Urban, a venture partner at UP.Partners and an Overroute board member, emphasized operational validation:
“After decades in logistics, I’ve learned that great technology only matters if it works in the operation.”
Roadmap beyond execution
Overroute’s longer-term roadmap extends beyond automating individual load coordination. The company is developing capabilities in freight planning and asset optimization — shifting from task-level augmentation toward supporting strategic operational decisions across carrier networks.
This evolution reflects a broader industry shift: AI is moving past information retrieval into direct execution support. With proven deployment at scale inside J.B. Hunt — and upcoming expansion to other carriers — Overroute’s platform serves as a real-world test of whether AI agents can reliably manage the coordination work that underpins freight execution across enterprise logistics environments.
