Gartner Launches First Supply Chain Strategy Consulting Magic Quadrant

According to scdigest.com, Gartner released its inaugural Magic Quadrant for Supply Chain Strategy, Planning and Operations Consulting on July 28, 2026, evaluating nine global consulting firms across two dimensions: completeness of vision and ability to execute.

Four Firms Named Leaders in 2026 Ranking

The report identifies Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, and McKinsey as the four Leaders — the highest designation — based on their performance in both strategic vision and operational delivery. These firms earned placement in the top-right quadrant of Gartner’s four-box matrix. Boston Consulting Group was classified as a Visionary, EY as a Challenger, and KPMG, Capgemini, and Bain & Company were placed in the Niche Player quadrant.

This first-ever Magic Quadrant for supply chain consulting reflects Gartner’s expanding scope beyond technology solutions — such as warehouse management systems (WMS) and transportation management systems (TMS) — into service domains including global third-party logistics (3PLs) and now strategy and operations advisory. The evaluation involved a rigorous process with participation from nine firms, all of which submitted documentation, underwent analyst interviews, and provided customer references.

Methodology and Market Context

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant framework has been a benchmark in enterprise technology and services since its introduction. Vendors are plotted along two axes: completeness of vision (assessing innovation, market understanding, and roadmap) and ability to execute (measuring sales performance, customer satisfaction, and delivery consistency). A firm must score highly on both to achieve Leader status.

The launch comes amid growing demand for integrated supply chain transformation — driven by disruptions including geopolitical volatility, climate-related port delays, and evolving customer expectations for resilience and responsiveness. According to industry data, global spending on supply chain consulting reached $12.4 billion in 2025, with compound annual growth projected at 7.3% through 2028. This expansion aligns with parallel trends, such as Sandy Montalbano of the Reshoring Initiative noting that reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) balanced offshoring in both 2014 and 2015, reversing a two-decade net loss of ~200,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs per year between 2000–2007.

Practitioner Perspectives and Implementation Realities

Supply chain professionals emphasized pragmatic implementation over theoretical frameworks. Ian Jansen, NHLS, observed that “SCM is all about getting the order delivered to the Customer on date/time requested because happy Customers = Revenue,” underscoring the operational stakes behind strategic consulting engagements. He cited firsthand experience managing a distribution center handling more than 400,000 line items, where picker productivity was measured in “picks per day” — a granular KPI reflecting execution rigor.

Jo Ann Tudtud-Navalta, Materials Management Manager at Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, Philippines, stressed documentation discipline:

“Putting everything in writing ensures better understanding, enables review and correction, provides tangible proof, serves as a reference, creates historical data for future decisions, and supports onboarding of new team members.” — Jo Ann Tudtud-Navalta, Materials Management Manager, Chong Hua Hospital, Cebu City, Philippines

Her perspective highlights how foundational governance practices intersect with high-level strategy — a point reinforced by Carsten Baumann, Strategic Alliance Manager at Schneider Electric, who noted the 2016 Hype Cycle placement of IoT Platforms in the “Peak of Inflated Expectation” — distinguishing platform software tools from broader IoT adoption.
