ArcBest, ABF Freight Announce 5.9% LTL Rate Increase — Supply Chain Dive

ArcBest and subsidiary ABF Freight will have general rate increases of about 5.9%, the transportation conglomerate announced Monday.

By David Taube | 2026-06-08

Effective Date and Historical Context

The changes go into effect June 22, but specific lanes and shipments may vary, the company said.

The LTL carrier’s rate increases typically occur in the back half of the year as opposed to Q2. Its last general rate increase was 5.9% in August 2025.

Q2 Performance Drivers

The increase follows the company reporting last week a heavier freight mix for Q2 metrics to date. Year over year, its asset-based segment, featuring ABF Freight, was up 10% and tonnage increased 5% — despite shipments declining 2% per day.

The company also revised the LTL’s Q2 operating ratio forecast, projecting a sequential improvement of 6 to 7 percentage points as opposed to a seasonal uptick of approximately 3.5 percentage points, the carrier said last week.

Executive Commentary and Market Conditions

“Core LTL pricing continues to improve, and that’s really supported by the rational market, the disciplined actions that we’ve continued to take even despite the softer environment,” ArcBest CEO and President Seth Runser said in late April on an earnings call, adding that volume and capacity improvements would translate to rate improvement.

The changes also come amid a yearslong high in manufacturing sentiment from January through May as captured by the Institute for Supply Management surveys along with an LTL long-distance producer price index surging 20% in April YoY, based on preliminary federal data.

Modal Shift and Capacity Trends

Among the shifts, truckload shipments are showing signs of beginning to move into LTL freight, C.H. Robinson Worldwide said in a June report. The impact is varied and incremental, the firm suggested.

“While demand growth is still limited, early indicators suggest capacity is beginning to tighten, particularly as freight begins to rebalance between modes,” C.H. Robinson said. “Demand is improving at the edges rather than accelerating broadly.”
