Air freight rates surge to 3-year high amid Middle East disruption

According to theloadstar.com, air cargo rates have climbed to their highest level in three years, driven by sustained Middle East operational disruptions, helium shortages, and surging demand from the AI hardware boom. The Loadstar’s Week 21, 2026 News in Brief podcast — released on 24 May 2026 — details how these converging pressures are reshaping global air logistics capacity and cost structures.

Ocean Freight Overcapacity Persists Amid Peak Season Erosion

Noatum Logistics’ Stephanie Loomis joined host Charlotte Goldstone to analyze structural shifts in container shipping. She confirmed that traditional peak season patterns have disappeared entirely in 2026, with carriers operating under persistent overcapacity despite seasonal demand expectations. This has triggered aggressive contracting behavior: major carriers are now offering 12-month contract windows — up from the standard 6–9 months — to lock in volume and stabilize pricing. According to the report, spot rates on key Asia–Europe lanes remain 18% below 2025 averages, reflecting ongoing imbalance between vessel supply and cargo demand.

Air Cargo Under Multifaceted Pressure

Alex Lennane, The Loadstar’s air cargo analyst, reported that air freight rates reached a three-year high in mid-May 2026. Three interlocking factors drive this surge: first, continued rerouting of ocean freight around the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz has increased transshipment dependency on air legs; second, the AI chip and server rollout cycle has spiked demand for time-sensitive air transport of high-value semiconductors and cooling components; third, a global helium shortage has constrained balloon-assisted cargo surveillance and delayed maintenance on helium-dependent avionics testing equipment at key hubs including JFK and Newark.

Safety Allegations Escalate at Major U.S. Airports

The podcast highlighted serious safety concerns involving Alliance Ground International (AGI), one of North America’s largest outsourced cargo handlers. As reported in a 18 May 2026 Loadstar investigation, AGI faces multiple pending citations from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Allegations include unsecured cargo pallets collapsing during ramp transfers and failure to calibrate weight-distribution sensors on 17 loader vehicles across both airports. The report states that AGI handled over 1.2 million tonnes of air cargo in the U.S. in 2025.

Tariff-Driven Route Realignment Accelerates

Supply chain adaptations to Section 301 tariffs and new EU CBAM implementation timelines are accelerating route changes. The podcast cited data showing that 42% of U.S.-bound containerized electronics shipments from China now transit through Vietnam or Malaysia before final ocean leg — up from 28% in Q4 2025. Meanwhile, MSC’s recently announced Medlog acquisition of Maritime Transport — a deal valued at $480 million — signals carrier consolidation aimed at optimizing intra-Asia feeder networks amid shifting trade flows.
