Swissport acquires Swiftair Maroc to enter Moroccan cargo market

According to www.aircargonews.net, Swissport has entered the Moroccan air cargo market through the acquisition of Casablanca-based Swiftair Maroc — a dedicated cargo handling company operating at Mohammed V International Airport, Morocco’s primary airfreight hub that handles approximately 95% of the country’s total air cargo volumes.

Strategic Infrastructure and Regulatory Timeline

Swiftair Maroc operates a 3,700 sq m airside warehouse at Mohammed V Airport, equipped with temperature-controlled infrastructure including specialised cold rooms for pharmaceutical products and perishable goods. The transaction remains subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals — a standard requirement for cross-border aviation services acquisitions in North Africa. This move marks Swissport’s first direct entry into Morocco’s cargo handling segment, though the company already maintains an extensive ground handling footprint across the country: it serves 16 airports nationwide, operates executive aviation (FBO) facilities in Marrakesh, Casablanca and Tangier, and manages 10 airport lounges under its Aspire brand across nine locations.

Leadership Statements and Regional Strategy

“Morocco is a dynamic and fast-growing market with increasing importance in global trade flows,” said Warwick Brady, president and chief executive of Swissport International. “The acquisition of Swiftair Maroc supports our strategy to further expand and accelerate the growth of our global cargo business.”

Brady underscored Morocco’s role as “a pivotal gateway between Europe, Africa and the Americas”, citing strong export industries including automotive, aerospace, agriculture and textiles. The country is also set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, an event expected to drive infrastructure upgrades and logistics demand across the region. Dirk Goovaerts, Swissport’s chief executive for continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India & global cargo chair, added that Swiftair Maroc provides “a strong platform for expanding our cargo business in Morocco” and highlighted opportunities to increase capacity in high-value and specialised cargo handling — particularly for time-sensitive pharmaceutical and perishable supply chains.

Africa Expansion Accelerates with Dual Acquisitions

This acquisition is not isolated: in April 2026, Swissport signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a majority stake in CV Handling — the main ground handling provider across seven airports in Cabo Verde. That deal followed a competitive privatisation process led by the Cabo Verdean government, where Swissport was selected as the preferred bidder. With this addition, Swissport’s African presence now spans 30 stations in six countries: Algeria, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. The CV Handling acquisition grants the local operator access to Swissport’s global operational standards, advanced digital solutions and international airline partnerships — reinforcing a consistent capability upgrade model across its African portfolio.

Industry Context and Practitioner Implications

Swissport’s dual moves align with broader industry trends. According to IATA data, Africa’s air cargo volumes grew 6.2% year-on-year in 2025, outpacing the global average of 4.1%. Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport has expanded its cargo terminal capacity by 40% since 2022, supporting Morocco’s export-led industrial policy — which targets $12 billion in aerospace exports by 2030. For supply chain professionals, the consolidation signals tighter integration between ground handling and cargo logistics: Swissport’s end-to-end service model — combining FBO, lounge, passenger, and now dedicated cargo operations — enables shippers to streamline handoffs, reduce dwell time, and meet stringent cold-chain compliance requirements for pharma shipments. Notably, over 78% of pharmaceutical air freight moving through North Africa transits via Casablanca, per Air Cargo Intelligence 2025 benchmarking reports.
